Success Story - Crow Works

When Brad purchased Crow Works in 2017, the business already had deep roots in the community. Established in 2003 and acquired from its second owner, Crow Works offered a natural fit for a new chapter after a career in the Army. With a long-standing hobby interest in engraving and a desire to stay active in the local business community, taking ownership of the shop was both a practical and personal decision.

As the business evolved, Community Futures Crowsnest Pass became an important partner along the journey. Through ongoing business advice and access to a line of credit, they provided both guidance and financial flexibility as the company sought to grow and adapt.

One of the biggest challenges the business faced was physical space. The size of the existing building and property limited expansion, and building permit restrictions made it difficult to enlarge the shop in the traditional way. Community Futures helped provide a practical interim solution. With support from a line of credit, the business purchased a mobile workshop trailer and parked it on the property, immediately increasing available workspace. This temporary expansion created room to develop new services and continue building toward a longer-term vision for the shop.

The additional space and strategic planning paid off. With support and insight from Community Futures Crowsnest Pass, the business refined its focus—concentrating on fewer, more profitable lines of work while outsourcing other services. This shift allowed Crow Works to take on a new role as a general contractor for larger sign projects throughout Southwest Alberta.

Today, commercial signage is the company’s fastest-growing line of business. By installing signage on behalf of national sign companies, the business has tapped into a growing market fueled by increasing development across the region. Located strategically to support projects coming from Calgary, Crow Works is well-positioned to serve national brands expanding into Southwest Alberta.

Beyond business growth, the owner has remained deeply involved in the community, serving on various local boards and contributing organizational and business expertise. Community Futures Crowsnest Pass has also played a valuable role in strengthening those connections, providing opportunities to network with other local stakeholders through educational sessions and community events.

For other entrepreneurs considering working with Community Futures Crowsnest Pass, Brad emphasizes the importance of understanding the local market—especially in rural areas. Business models that work in large urban centers don’t always translate directly to smaller communities. In rural markets, resilience often comes from maintaining multiple lines of business and being ready to adapt when conditions change.

That adaptability proved crucial during the pandemic years. While some areas of the business slowed significantly, the ability to pivot to other opportunities allowed Crow Works not only to survive but to continue growing.

With a combination of local knowledge, strategic flexibility, and strong community partnerships, Crow Works continues to build on its foundation—demonstrating how rural businesses can thrive when innovation meets the right support.
